Important Information
What is Shorea?
Shorea, also known as bankarai, is a tropical hardwood
which grows naturally and plentifully in the Pacific Rim countries of Malaysia, Indonesia, the
Philippines and Burma. It is closely related to tectona grandis, or Burma Teak, and is therefore
used in many outdoor applications like shipbuilding, bridges, piers, and outdoor furniture. The
abundance of shorea, as well as its accessibility, has made it a considerably less expensive
choice over teak for all outdoor applications. Dense and hard, shorea is highly resistant to rot
and bug infestation. It is heavy, making it resistant to wear and marring. Shorea will weather
naturally to a warm shade of gray over a period of about one year. If you choose to maintain the
original color of the wood you may apply a teak oil seasonally.
Our shorea, like many teak supplies, comes from the Indonesian island of Java. Forestry on the
island of Java has been diligently managed by the Perum Perhutani, Indonesia's governmental
department which oversees the cultivation and harvesting of teak, shorea, and many other species
of trees.
Quality Construction
Quality furniture construction begins with the method of joinery. Our furniture uses mortise
and tenon joinery, which is the strongest and longest lasting of all furniture building methods,
and we use this method in every possible situation. Simply drive in a series of solid wood dowels
and your furniture will remain stable and secure for many generations. To reduce shipping costs
and ease of storage, all Oxford Garden furniture is shipped in rugged, lined cartons, ready for
simple assembly. Most of the items have a total of five pre-assembled parts to put together, and
it takes the average person 10-15 minutes to complete each piece. A hammer and screwdriver
(preferably a power screwdriver) are the only tools necessary. The precision of mortise cuts and
tight fitting tenons are exceptional. That's why we receive many compliments on the ease of
assemblage and the exceptionally high quality of craftsmanship in our furniture.
Wood Care
One of the most important benefits of shorea wood is its resistance to rot and bug damage.
With little or no maintenance, shorea will last many years outdoors.
Shorea has a remarkable ability to withstand the effects of wind, rain, sun and snow. Left
untreated, shorea will weather naturally to a warm shade of gray.
During wet weather, some surface roughness may develop but over a period of about one year
the natural weathering process will stabilize. Some hairline cracks may appear but these are only
on the surface and in no way effect the structural integrity of the furniture. We believe this is
the best way to “maintain ” your furniture. Sit back, enjoy the scenery, and do nothing at all.
Let nature take its course by turning your furniture into a beautiful rich work of art.
If you prefer to maintain the beautiful rich tonalities of the natural wood in its newly
arrived condition apply a coat of teak oil upon receiving your new furniture.
If the effects of weather have already weathered your furniture into a natural grey, and you
would like to restore it to its original “new” condition, first apply a coat of teak cleaner,
followed by a coat of teak brightener. This restores the wood by removing the grey. To maintain
the color of the wood and to give it a richer, darker patina, apply a coat of teak oil.
